Don Esa, Associate Pastor

The youngest of three sons, Don Esa, was born and raised in a Christian home in Denver, Colorado.  He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Denver and completed an undeclared minor in Skiing the Colorado Rockies.

Determined to use his (official) degree, Don went to work as a news reporter at three different Colorado radio stations.  One of those positions took him to Colorado Springs where he became involved in a large single adult program at the First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs.  There, he met Mary Washburn of Topeka, Kansas.

Following Don and Mary’s marriage, in 1977, he wrestled with continuing a career in broadcasting.  In June, Don applied to Princeton Theological Seminary and was granted entrance with the class beginning that fall.

After seminary, Don accepted his first call as an Assistant Pastor at the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Four years later, he accepted another call as Associate Pastor at the Madeira Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. While there, Don earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary.

In 1997, Don was led to First Presbyterian Church as the Minister of Education.  His tasks here:  to oversee the educational ministry of FPC.  On any given Sunday, Don watches over 175 volunteer teachers and workers manning some three dozen Sunday morning classes.  On any other day of the week, Don is supervising a dozen weekday classes and our Wednesday evening programs.

Don feels that Christian Education is a critical component in a thriving church. He dreams of a day when 100% of our membership is well-matched into a Sunday School class!

Don and Mary live in West Cobb. When she is not busy leading a third grade Sunday School class, Mary works for Georgian Bank near Cumberland Mall.  They have two children: Davin, age 24, and Brianna, age 21.

The skiing thing has fallen by the wayside and now, Don “minors” in photography and meeting the constant demands of yard maintenance.  With Mary by his side, he also enjoys the theater, movies, travel, and other social events.
