We invite anyone who enjoys reading to join us in our monthly book discussions. Our upcoming books to be discussed are listed below. Most of the books we read can be found in a public library or purchased as paperback editions. Please come and share your love of books with us.

Today's children are bright and busy people. So why, when they grow up, do so many of them have problems keeping their homes, getting jobs, holding jobs, and staying married? Why are today's bright and busy parents exhausting themselves doing all the housework and driving their children all over town? This workshop is for parents of children ages four through 18 who want to prepare them for responsible adulthood. Helping children learn to care for their own homes is a vital part of that preparation. The class will include teaching, discussion, and individual activities.

Special Time: 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

This one-evening course covers adult, child, and infant CPR, and also teaches procedures to use with a choking victim. It's a fun and interactive course which can be adapted by the instructor to meet the needs of the class participants, including teachers, childcare professionals, caregivers, parents, nursery workers, and baby-sitters. A two-year certification is earned upon completion.


RegisterFacing the Crazy Real Estate Market

Instructor: Mikel Sutton Crowley, Realtor

We will look at the history and future of the real estate market in Cobb County. Participants will learn the ins and outs of foreclosures and short sales, how to apply for a loan, and the purchase process. Sellers and buyers will be given tools to protect themselves during the selling and buying of property. Guest speakers will include an attorney, a loan officer, a home inspector, and an appraiser. Even if you are not planning to sell or buy in the future, you will learn how to keep your real estate investments strong and stable.

This one-evening course covers a range of first aid to use on children through seniors, and is designed to meet the needs of a diverse classroom audience. Learn how to handle broken bones, asthma, head injuries, bleeding, and more. Take advantage of this fun and interactive class that is appropriate for many people, including teachers, childcare professionals, caregivers, parents, nursery workers, and baby-sitters. A two-year certification is earned upon completion.


Flower Arranging: The Basics (Class is currently at maximum enrollment)

Instructors: Bobby Thomas and Marilyn Tucker
Cost: $20 for flowers and supplies
Maximum enrollment: 8

Take advantage of this opportunity to participate in hands-on practice of basic flower design and to watch expert demonstrations. You will have a chance to work with greenery from your own yard and with grocery store flowers to make your own arrangements. Learn how to make centerpieces as well as front-only designs, with emphasis on texture, line and color. Bobby and Marilyn will teach the basic mechanics of flower arranging and will give adavice on working with one of your own favorite containers.


RegisterGenealogy 101

Would you like to know more about your ancestors? Where did they originate, where did they live, and what were their occupations? This 12-week course that features speakers from the Genealogy Society of Cobb County will help track such information. Learn about getting started, organizing your research, research methodology, citing sources, cemetery records, and census records. The class will also help you in such areas as Internet sources, geneaology software, land and tax records, and probate records/deeds/wills. Find out about your family history!


Register"Going Green" This Spring

Instructor: Candice Moore Groves, licensed architect, green design specialist

Whether you have begun "greening" your home or you have not yet started, please come to learn, share, and work toward being better stewards of the earth. We will discuss topics pertaining to your home such as recycling, energy and water reduction, efficiency projects, environmentally-preferred purchases, composting, rain barrels, and household chemicals. We'll also explore transportation, supporting the local economy, and carrying sustainability into your place of business or school. Please bring questions to the first class. A booklet with terminology, resources, and tax incentives will be distributed.


RegisterGreeting Card Creations

Cost: $4-$6 for dry adhesive material

Would you like to learn how to create handcrafted greeting cards for all sorts of occasions? Maybe you're already an avid card-maker and you would enjoy working on your projects in the company of other enthusiasts. We will make two unique cards per class. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and your own dry adhesive such as a tape runner or other double-sided adhesive which are available at local craft stores. Whatever your skill level, let's share some time of mutual inspiration and fellowship.

If you are a new member or are interested in becoming a member, come learn about the life of First Presbyterian Church, Marietta (FPC). Participants will get to know others who are new to FPC, learn about the church and its ministries and missions, and find out how to actively participate in church life. The class facilitator and guest speakers will lead discussions on what it means to be part of FPC and to make a meaningful contribution as a new member.

Utilizing various styles of prayer, we will explore the scriptures used throughout Lent. Each class will focus on a different Sunday morning's Lenten scripture. The prayer styles, such as Lectio Devina, centering prayer, and visualization, will be used to delve into the spirituality of each scriptural text. Come prepare yourself for Easter!

Join us for a Chinese system of slow meditative physical exercise designed to promote relaxation, balance, flexibility, improved range of movement, and better posture. Tai Chi (Taiji) is a form of mind/body exercise that uses low-impact, gentle moves, and deep breathing. Start the new year as a healthier you.


RegisterYarn Works for Prayer Shawl Ministry

Participants in this group will work on individual knitted or crocheted Prayer Shawls. Help and support are available for all skill levels. We will provide friendship among ourselves and ministry to those who receive our shawls. Join us!

Instructor: Norrie Saunders

Ever thought about trying yoga but were unsure if you could do it, or if you believed in it, or if the principles of yoga could jive with your belief in Christ? Try Yoga with Norrie as we apply ancient yogic techniques of strength-building, stretching, and relaxation in a Christ-centered setting. All ages, all skill levels, and both males and females are welcome. This class will both challenge and enliven you. If you already have a yoga mat, please bring it. If not, bring a beach towel to practice on. Be sure to wear comfortable, stretchable clothing!


RegisterYoung Career Women's Bible Study

Leaders: Erin Eby and Kelly Owen
Cost: $8-$10 for the book

This Bible study is geared toward single and married working women in their 20s and 30s who want to grow in their relationships with the Lord. We study Scripture together through a book and talk about ways to apply it to our lives. We enjoy fellowship together and laugh a lot. Our studies only take about 10 minutes of preparation per week. The Bible Study met all last year, but we are open and welcoming to new members.
